We often look at a dog—or even another human—and try to diagnose their “personality” or “spirit.” When a dog barks frantically at the window, lunges at other dogs, or resource-guards their bowl, we label them as “anxious,” “aggressive,” or “dominant.”
But these mentalistic labels are illusions. They treat behavior as an internal, unchangeable trait rather than what it actually is: a reaction to an environment.
If you want to truly understand and change behavior, you have to stop looking for a hidden “mind” and start looking at the organism as a catalog of behaviors. And the best way to navigate that catalog is to treat it like an onion.
The Compound Layers of Cause and Effect
An organism’s current state is rarely the result of a single event. It is a compounding stack of historical contingencies, immediate antecedents, and physiological stressors. When a dog exhibits a chaotic mix of problematic behaviors, you aren’t looking at a broken animal; you are looking at an onion with multiple, overlapping layers.
Every distinct behavior has a functional cause. It serves a purpose—usually safety, comfort, or resource acquisition.
The mistake most people make is trying to fix the whole animal at once. They try to smash the onion. But behavioral modification is a science of precision. It is a process of systematic subtraction.
Peeling the Layers
To change the catalog, you have to isolate one cause at a time:
- Identify the Top Layer: Find the most prominent, immediate behavior and trace it to its functional environmental trigger.
- Terminate the Cause: Modify the environment, remove the reinforcement, or change the contingencies so that specific functional relationship no longer exists.
- Reveal the Next Layer: Once that top layer is peeled away, the behavioral landscape changes. A secondary behavior—previously masked or overshadowed by the louder, primary behavior—becomes the new surface.
You repeat this process. Isolate, terminate, peel. Isolate, terminate, peel.
What’s Left When the Onion is Gone?
This framework often makes people uncomfortable. If you keep peeling away layers of behavior by eliminating their causes, what happens when there is no onion left? Do you end up with an empty void? An algorithmic robot?
Absolutely not.
When you peel away all the layers of historical baggage, learned defensive maneuvers, and environmental friction, you aren’t left with emptiness. You are left with the baseline organism.
By systematically removing the maladaptive layers, you reveal the clean slate. You get the dog you actually wanted all along—an adaptable, cooperative animal that is perfectly attuned to the present moment, completely unburdened by the weight of past contingencies.
You don’t build a good dog by adding complex training commands; you find a good dog by subtracting the noise, layer by layer.
