The “Prey Drive” Myth: You Can’t Create What’s Already Built In

If you spend five minutes in a modern dog training forum, you will inevitably hit the same tired piece of standard advice: “Don’t let your dog chase that ball, that squirrel, or that flirt pole. If you let them chase, you’re going to create prey drive.”

It is an industry-wide old wives’ tale wrapped in pseudo-scientific concern. It betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of basic canine biology and behavioral genetics.

Let’s get one thing straight: You cannot create an instinct.

The Tapestry of Instinct

Prey drive isn’t a bad habit a dog picks up because you let them have too much fun on a Tuesday afternoon. It is an inherited, hardwired genetic program. It is the predatory motor pattern—orient, eye, stalk, chase, grab-bite, kill-bite—that has been woven into the DNA of Canis lupus familiaris over thousands of years of evolution and deliberate breeding.

When a dog engages in a clean, structured predatory sequence—like chasing a toy on a flirt pole or tracking down a ball—their nervous system experiences a natural, healthy arc.
